The Cordouan Lighthouse
Between Le Verdon-sur-Mer and Royan, Cordouan lighthouse, is 7 kilometers out in the open sea.
It was in the 14th century that a polygonal tower saw erected, topped with a plateau on which a fire was lit. This was Cordouan's first lighthouse!
A monument to the glory of Franco-American friendship was erected at the Pointe de Grave from which La Fayette left on March 24, 1777 to bring French aid to the American insurgents.
You can enjoy a tour of this majestic lighthouse, built in 1611, accessible by boat and on foot at low tide.
